Savannah, Georgia: Four Wonderful Days of Southern Charm, History, Exceptional Dining, and Unforgettable Hospitality
October 20–23, 2026 | A Personal Travel Experience with Rich & Patti Goellner
Some trips are memorable because of the places you visit. Others become special because of the people you meet, the experiences you share, and the wonderful memories you bring home. Our recent four-day getaway to Savannah, Georgia, was all of those things and more!
From October 20th through October 23rd, Patti and I had the pleasure of exploring one of the South's most beautiful and historic cities. We had been looking forward to this trip for quite some time, and Savannah certainly did not disappoint.
Before leaving our home in Palm Coast, Florida, we spent time researching Savannah's attractions, historic tours, restaurants, and accommodations. With a thoughtfully planned itinerary, we arrived excited to experience everything this remarkable Southern city had to offer.
And what a wonderful experience it turned out to be!
Our Home Away from Home: The Magnificent Perry Lane Hotel
One of the highlights of our entire visit was our stay at the beautiful Perry Lane Hotel, located in the heart of Savannah's Historic District.
This elegant hotel offers a wonderful combination of Southern hospitality, luxurious accommodations, and modern sophistication. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed and appreciated.
The hotel's beautiful surroundings, inviting atmosphere, and attention to detail made our stay truly special. Its convenient location was another tremendous advantage, allowing us to explore Savannah's historic neighborhoods, attractions, and restaurants without constantly needing our car.
Our plan was to park the car when we arrived and leave it there until it was time to return home to Palm Coast. Savannah proved to be a wonderful city to experience on foot and through local transportation.
But what made our stay particularly memorable wasn't simply the beautiful hotel. It was the people.
A Very Special Thank You to Randy, Our Wonderful Concierge!
We would be remiss if we didn't recognize someone who helped make our Savannah getaway such an outstanding experience.
Randy, our concierge at the Perry Lane Hotel, deserves a very special shout-out!
Throughout our stay, Randy went above and beyond to ensure that Patti and I were comfortable, well-informed, and able to make the most of our time in Savannah.
His professionalism, genuine friendliness, attention to detail, and willingness to help made us feel like valued guests rather than simply visitors.
In a world where exceptional customer service sometimes seems difficult to find, Randy was a wonderful reminder of what true hospitality looks like.
There is something special about meeting someone who genuinely enjoys helping others. Randy certainly demonstrated that quality throughout our visit.
Randy, thank you for taking such wonderful care of us. You helped make our visit unforgettable, and we sincerely appreciate everything you did!
The Perry Lane Hotel is fortunate to have someone like Randy representing its commitment to exceptional hospitality.
A Special Shout-Out to the Entire Perry Lane Hotel Team!
While Randy certainly deserves special recognition, Patti and I also want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to every member of the Perry Lane Hotel staff who helped make our four-day stay so extraordinary.
From the moment we arrived until the day we departed, we were consistently impressed by the professionalism, friendliness, and genuine hospitality of everyone we encountered. Every employee seemed to take great pride in making guests feel welcome, comfortable, and appreciated.
What impressed us most was how naturally everyone made us feel right at home. Whether it was a friendly greeting, a warm smile, or someone going out of their way to be helpful, the entire team demonstrated a level of personal service that truly sets the Perry Lane Hotel apart.
Having spent many years in business, I have always believed that the people within an organization are what make it truly exceptional. The employees at the Perry Lane Hotel are a wonderful example of that philosophy.
To the entire Perry Lane Hotel team: Thank you for your outstanding professionalism, kindness, friendliness, and genuine Southern hospitality. You made Patti and me feel like family rather than hotel guests, and that is something we will never forget!
The beautiful accommodations and excellent location certainly make the Perry Lane Hotel a wonderful place to stay, but it is the exceptional people who work there who make it a truly unforgettable experience.
We look forward to returning and seeing all of you again!
Discovering Savannah Aboard the Historic Trolley Tour
One of our favorite ways to become acquainted with Savannah was taking the historic trolley tour.
What a wonderful way to explore the city!
The trolley tour provided an opportunity to see Savannah's historic neighborhoods, magnificent architecture, beautiful public squares, and famous landmarks while learning about the people and events that shaped the city.
We especially enjoyed seeing the magnificent oak trees draped in Spanish moss, the beautifully preserved historic homes, and the charming streets that make Savannah so distinctive.
The tour also helped us appreciate the layout of the Historic District and introduced us to places we wanted to explore further.
For anyone visiting Savannah for the first time, we highly recommend taking a historic trolley tour. It is an enjoyable and informative way to become familiar with this fascinating city.
Forsyth Park: A Picture-Perfect Savannah Experience
Another highlight of our trip was visiting Forsyth Park, one of Savannah's most recognizable and beautiful landmarks.
The park's famous fountain, majestic oak trees, landscaped grounds, and inviting walking paths create an atmosphere of peaceful Southern elegance.
It is easy to understand why Forsyth Park is one of the city's most photographed destinations.
Patti and I enjoyed experiencing the beauty and charm of this wonderful public space. The magnificent trees and historic surroundings reminded us of what makes Savannah such a unique destination.
Forsyth Park is a place where visitors can slow down, appreciate their surroundings, and enjoy the natural beauty that Savannah is so well known for.
Exploring Savannah's Historic Squares
One of Savannah's most remarkable features is its collection of beautiful historic public squares.
As we explored the Historic District, we were impressed by the way these charming squares are woven into the city's neighborhoods.
Surrounded by historic homes, churches, monuments, and magnificent oak trees, each square has its own personality and historical significance.
Walking through these beautifully preserved areas felt like stepping back in time.
The architecture, landscaped gardens, shaded walkways, and peaceful surroundings create an atmosphere that is difficult to describe until you experience it for yourself.
For Patti and me, these historic squares were among the most charming aspects of our Savannah visit.
They also provided wonderful opportunities to simply enjoy being together while discovering the city's remarkable heritage.
River Street: History, Shopping, and Waterfront Charm
Our Savannah adventure also included a visit to historic River Street, one of the city's most popular waterfront destinations.
Located along the Savannah River, River Street offers a wonderful combination of historic buildings, cobblestone streets, unique shops, restaurants, and beautiful waterfront scenery.
The area reflects Savannah's long history as an important port city.
We enjoyed experiencing the lively atmosphere and taking in the views of the river, where the city's maritime heritage remains very much alive.
River Street has a character all its own. The historic architecture, waterfront activity, and variety of shops and restaurants make it an enjoyable destination for visitors of all ages.
It is certainly a place we would recommend including on any Savannah itinerary.
Bonaventure Cemetery: A Remarkable Journey Through History
One of the most fascinating experiences of our trip was visiting Bonaventure Cemetery.
Although visiting a cemetery might not initially sound like a typical vacation activity, Bonaventure is truly extraordinary.
Known for its magnificent oak trees draped in Spanish moss, elaborate monuments, historic gravesites, and beautiful sculptures, Bonaventure Cemetery offers a remarkable combination of history, art, and natural beauty.
The peaceful surroundings and fascinating history make it unlike any cemetery we had previously experienced.
Walking through this historic property provides a unique perspective on Savannah's past and the generations of people who helped shape the city.
We found Bonaventure to be both beautiful and thought-provoking.
For anyone who appreciates history, architecture, and places of historical significance, we would certainly recommend including Bonaventure Cemetery in a Savannah visit.
Exceptional Dining: Three Wonderful Savannah Restaurants
Of course, no vacation would be complete without enjoying some wonderful meals!
Before our trip, Patti and I researched Savannah's dining scene and selected several restaurants that came highly recommended.
We ultimately enjoyed dining at three of Savannah's notable establishments: Vic's on the River, The Grey, and The Olde Pink House.
We are delighted to report that all three lived up to our expectations!
Each restaurant offered its own distinctive atmosphere and dining experience, adding another wonderful dimension to our Savannah getaway.
Vic's on the River: Dining in Savannah's Historic Waterfront District
One of our dining experiences was at Vic's on the River, a restaurant located in a historic building overlooking the Savannah River.
The restaurant combines a welcoming atmosphere with the charm of Savannah's historic waterfront district.
Its beautiful setting and Southern-inspired menu make it a popular destination for visitors and residents alike.
Patti and I thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. The combination of excellent food, attentive service, and historic surroundings made for a memorable occasion.
There is something especially enjoyable about dining in a restaurant where the building and location are part of the experience.
Vic's on the River certainly delivered that combination.
A Special Thank You to Richard!
We would also like to extend a very special thank you to Richard, who took such wonderful care of us during our dinner at Vic's on the River.
His warm personality, attentiveness, and genuine hospitality made our dining experience even more enjoyable. It is always a pleasure to encounter someone who takes such pride in providing excellent service and making guests feel welcome.
Richard, thank you for helping make our evening so memorable. Your kindness and outstanding service were sincerely appreciated!
The Grey: A Truly Unique Savannah Dining Experience
Another restaurant we had the pleasure of visiting was The Grey, one of Savannah's most distinctive dining destinations.
What makes The Grey particularly interesting is its location inside a beautifully restored former Greyhound bus terminal.
The transformation of this historic building into a sophisticated restaurant is a wonderful example of Savannah's ability to preserve its architectural heritage while creating something new and exciting.
The restaurant's creative approach to Southern cuisine and its distinctive atmosphere made this a particularly interesting dining experience.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and appreciated the combination of culinary creativity, historic architecture, and professional service.
The Grey is certainly a restaurant worth considering for anyone seeking a distinctive dining experience in Savannah.
A Special Thank You to Bridget!
We would also like to recognize Bridget, who provided us with exceptional service during our dinner at The Grey.
Her friendliness, professionalism, and attention to detail made us feel especially welcome. She helped create the kind of relaxed and enjoyable dining atmosphere that makes an evening out truly special.
Bridget, thank you for taking such wonderful care of us and for making our dining experience at The Grey so memorable. We sincerely appreciated your outstanding hospitality!
The Olde Pink House: Classic Savannah Elegance
Our Savannah dining experiences also included a visit to the famous Olde Pink House.
Located in one of Savannah's beautiful historic buildings, The Olde Pink House is known for its elegant Southern atmosphere, historic charm, and traditional Southern-inspired cuisine.
The building itself is a wonderful part of the experience, reflecting the architectural beauty and history that make Savannah so special.
Dining in such a historic setting adds an entirely different dimension to an evening out.
Patti and I enjoyed the atmosphere, hospitality, and wonderful dining experience.
The Olde Pink House is a perfect example of how Savannah combines history, hospitality, and excellent cuisine into something truly memorable.
Three Restaurants, Three Distinctive Experiences
What impressed us most about our Savannah dining experiences was that each restaurant offered something different.
Vic's on the River provided historic waterfront charm. The Grey offered a creative and distinctive dining experience in a beautifully restored landmark. The Olde Pink House captured the elegance and tradition of classic Southern hospitality.
All three restaurants were wonderful, and we would gladly recommend them to anyone planning a visit to Savannah.
We also appreciated the excellent service and warm hospitality we experienced throughout our dining adventures.
Our special thanks to Richard at Vic's on the River and Bridget at The Grey. Both contributed to making our evenings particularly enjoyable and memorable.
Four Days That Went by Much Too Quickly
Our itinerary provided a wonderful balance of sightseeing, history, relaxation, and exceptional dining.
From our historic trolley tour and walks through Savannah's beautiful squares to visiting Forsyth Park, River Street, and Bonaventure Cemetery, each experience helped us appreciate this remarkable city a little more.
Our stay at the Perry Lane Hotel provided the perfect home base, while our meals at Vic's on the River, The Grey, and The Olde Pink House added wonderful culinary memories to our getaway.
What impressed us most was how beautifully Savannah combines its rich history with modern comforts, excellent restaurants, outstanding hospitality, and a relaxed Southern lifestyle.
And perhaps the best part was simply having four wonderful days to enjoy it all together.
Sometimes the most meaningful part of a vacation isn't how many attractions you visit, but the opportunity to slow down, explore someplace new, and create lasting memories with someone you love.
For Patti and me, Savannah provided exactly that opportunity.
Our Final Thoughts: Savannah, We Will Be Back!
As Patti and I headed home to Palm Coast on October 23rd, we reflected on what a wonderful getaway we had enjoyed.
Savannah exceeded our expectations.
The beauty of the city, its fascinating history, magnificent architecture, memorable sightseeing experiences, exceptional restaurants, and especially the warmth of the people made this a trip we will always remember.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the entire staff at the Perry Lane Hotel for making our stay so enjoyable.
And once again, a very special thank you to Randy, our outstanding concierge, whose kindness, professionalism, and genuine hospitality made an already wonderful trip even more memorable.
We would also like to thank Richard at Vic's on the River and Bridget at The Grey for their exceptional service and for helping make our dining experiences so special.
These three individuals reminded us that while beautiful destinations and wonderful meals are important, it is often the people we meet along the way who leave the most lasting impressions.
If you're considering a relaxing getaway filled with Southern charm, history, beautiful scenery, excellent restaurants, and wonderful hospitality, we wholeheartedly recommend Savannah, Georgia.
Whether you're planning a romantic getaway, a long weekend, or simply an opportunity to explore one of America's most beautiful historic cities, Savannah has so much to offer.
Savannah, thank you for four wonderful days and memories that will last a lifetime. We look forward to visiting again!
